Nikon Creative Lighting System Digital Field Guide Top Quality

If you're looking for a book that will explain the functionality of Nikons CLS & AWL systems, this fits the bill. If the menu on your SB-800 or SB-900 confuses you, you will find step by step instructions to do the things you need to in this book. At its best, this book is a good instruction manual for CLS flashes and the CLS functions of the Nikon bodies that can fire them remotely. Also, if you're totally new to strobist-style photography, the rather basic and uninspired section about flash applications could be a sort of primer for you about how portable, multiple-flash systems work. Unfortunately, Thomas isn't much of a writer. His style is best suited to lists of instructions. If you have some experience with flash photography, or have read any of the much better books about flash (or spent some time with [...]), you'll find the applications section of this book rudimentary and annoyingly vague. To sum up: this book provides an excellent functional description of the Nikon CLS system. Go elsewhere to learn the nuances that will make your use of the Nikon flash system truly creative.Get more detail about Nikon Creative Lighting System Digital Field Guide.

Lowest Price Within the Frame: The Journey of Photographic Vision

If you are looking for in-depth technical information, don't read this book. But if you want to be inspired and to gain greater insight into what photography is really all about (how to 'see' and visualise a composition), you will not be disappointed. Never mind that the subject matter is rather esoteric and not likely to be the focus of most of us; the lessons are in those all-important areas BEFORE we press the shutter: not least the often sensitive issue of how best to handle the human element. The author works in a genre where photographic riches abound, but the core elements of his experience and advice are pertinent to us all - even old bird and landscape snappers like me.Get more detail about Within the Frame: The Journey of Photographic Vision.

I think this book will be helpful as I get more experience but as a beginner it's over my head. Cheapest Sculpting with Light: Techniques for Portrait Photographers

When you pick up a book like this, what is your real intention? Is your goal to work for your local portrait studio? Is your goal to build your own studio and take portraits there? If you answered YES to either of these questions, then I think this is a great book for you to consider reading. If your goal is to take better pictures of your family members using your flash gun, or reach the elite level of fashion photography, then your search for the right book isn't over yet.

Allison Earnest takes you on a journey into her world of what I would call common private studio photography. This is actually the type of professional photographer that most of interact with at some point in our lives, be it our first family portrait, Senior portraits, or our wedding studio shoot. There's people like Allison in every city of the country, some of whom work independently and other who work for a large studio which sees hundreds of families daily. The techniques described in this book will teach you how to work in that industry to get results that you once paid what you thought was a lot of money for (your perception changes when you're the photographer :).

When I first skimmed through this book my first thought was "these pictures aren't that great," so I admit I went in with a negative attitude when I read this book. I quickly got annoyed with the author seemingly trying to sell me on Hensel lights throughout the book (note to editor - skip brand names if there is a next edition). However, as I read on I appreciated the authors middle chapters that offered some really good advice and tips that aren't always easy to find. Had I been the editor, I would have cut chapters 1 and 8 from the book and enhanced chapters 2 & 6. That leaves chapters 3, 4, 5, & 7 as being the real useful content in this book. For many that will be enough, especially if you don't have exposure to those concepts. I appreciated what was there, and suspect you will as well.

Skill Level: Any

Value: At retail, too much - but the going rate on Amazon is fair

Recommendation: If you are new to studio lighting and want to improve your portraiture then chapters 3 through 5 will be useful to you and probably worth the price of the book. If that isn't your goal then you shouldn't bother with this one. In the end, I say pick it up on sale and skip to the good stuff.

Buying Beginning Fingerstyle Blues Guitar (Book and Audio CD) (Guitar Books)

Although this book has received numerous reviews, here's one more. Berle and Galbo take the player step by step into rural blues in the tradition of Robert Johnson and others from the early twentieth century. It does take several exercises and short pieces before the music starts to sound like the blues, due mostly to the major triad focus at the beginning of the book. By the end, though, the pieces are like shortened versions of real blues instrumentals and songs. The pace of learning from piece to piece is just a little uneven at times, and there are some places where the player has to work out some technical details that need to be drilled beyond the printed exercises. Therefore, it's a book that would probably work well in guitar lessons. The CD is one of the more personable recordings that I've seen packaged with a music instruction book. The fluidity of the rural blues style really comes out in Galbo's playing on the CD, and he improvises beyond the printed scores just enough that the user of the book gets some ideas on how they too might change things up a little. Frankly, a couple of times he even flubs a lick and repeats the piece again. It may seem unheard of in a commercial product, but it makes this one of the more human packages out there. Because so much of this music was and is spontaneously composed by performers, perhaps one of the most valuable parts of Beginning Fingerstyle Blues Guitar is the section on short vamp phrases. Players can take these vamps and create their own pieces by working them out, modifying them as desired, experimenting with stringing some of the ideas together, and so on. The vamps are especially helpful to learn for accompanying yourself singing, especially if you find it difficult to sing a melody, remember or improvise the lyrics, and play an ever-evolving guitar accompaniment at the same time. While some of the licks and pieces are quite challenging and may present roadblocks, there's plenty of opportunity to work out your own solutions. One minor annoyance: every once in a while the player encounters a half note that is missing a stem. For those who read music, it's annoying; for those who read tabs, but are working on reading traditional notation, it could present a confusion. The editor should have been more careful.Get more detail about Beginning Fingerstyle Blues Guitar (Book and Audio CD) (Guitar Books).

Buy Hal Leonard Ukulele Method Book 1

I bought this as a Christmas present for some great Nieces and Nephews. I went over it first and found the book to be a super introduction for a person who really wants to learn to play more than the normal three chords on a Uke.

This set is terrific if you are interested in stretching and learning to understand what can really be done on a Uke rather than just getting stuck in one key. This book will easily lead you out of the doldrums which happen in many beginning instrument courses. It is a great source for a foundation of learning which ... is what you need to play any instrument.

The price is right at Amazon, the DVD / CD just reinforces what is being taught and progress is as fast as you want it to be.

Order Color: A Natural History of the Palette

As a graphic designer and color enthusiast I was excited to dig into this book. The actual text however is 90% excruciating personal minutia detailing to the author's attempt to find some kind of content to put into her book. Actual color history info is very scanty. I found it to be longwinded and far too self-indulgent. The subtitle is misleading and the book does not very well deliver on its promise.

I found the reading to be excruciating. With each page I kept telling myself--"the good stuff [relevant content] has to be coming soon". However it never does. For me this book was a disappointment. Definitely not what I was hoping for.Get more detail about Color: A Natural History of the Palette.

Where To Buy The Moment It Clicks: Photography secrets from one of the world's top shooters

I am a naturally curious person (technically), so this book is fun for me to read. It reveals how all pictures in the book were taken. Sometimes, it is not so obvious...It also helps understand why some types of pictures just look better than others.

Even though this book applies primarily to pro's with elaborate equipment (e.g., soft boxes, numerous light sources/strobes, grids, assistants, etc) there are many applicable hints for all photographers but perhaps starting from advanced amatures (such as myself).

It really makes you appreciate the art & science of photography and this highly skill author - he is artistic as well as technically competent.

I certainly recommend this book

Shop For Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of the Beatles

This review is from: Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of the Beatles (Hardcover)
I've read many Beatles books which were all fine and good, but this was just one of those books that had me captivated. If you know the Beatles' story in and out like myself, you will still find this book quite interesting, or at least it's a book you should read just to get a different feel than your typical bio.

Geoff E. goes through all the Beatles albums he engineered, techniques that were used in getting their sound, incidents and experiences with the Beatles, and his own observations during recording sessions. I felt like I was part of the action while I was reading (always a good sign!) and was entertained by all of the stories he told. It gives you an even better idea of them as people in the studio- granted through his eyes, but it's still an interesting viewpoint nonetheless.

As one might expect, there is a lot of technical lingo in the book which was, well...technical lingo- some of it I was kinda clueless on or didn't understand simply because I'm no sound engineer, but it was still neat to read how certain sounds were made, little things I didn't know about. I got a little bit of musical-sound education out of it so I didn't mind.

Like other reviewers said, Geoff does favor Paul (which he also mentions having the best rapport with him, so it's not like he hides it), but to me it wasn't obnoxious or anything that overshadowed the basis of the book. I'm a huge Lennon fan myself but I'm always interested in what other people think or what they've witnessed about him or the others, positive or not. It is a personal recollection and how things were through his eyes, so I went into the book keeping that in mind. He didn't engineer all of their albums which I wish he had- I would've loved to have learned more about say, how A Hard Day's night was engineered, but at the same time you get a great picture of how things went down through the albums he did work on, which is most of them anyway.

I love the personal spin on it. It's not by some guy who compiled a bunch of facts from all over and spit out a book- he was there when the music was being made first-hand, and had a big part in creating that sound. And considering the amount of time he spent with them in the studio- I'd say he's pretty fit to recount his experiences!

To cap off, I really like how this was written. I found Geoff E. to be a straight-forward kinda guy with some great ideas, of course with his own opinions. He has a conventional way about him, yeah, but mind you, he's creative. Gotta give him that. I don't know, I found him pretty down to earth for the most part, relate-able in a way. Beatle fans, read the book and get the experience! It's really great!!

Fretboard Logic SE: The Reasoning Behind the Guitar's Unique Tuning + Chords Scales and Arpeggios Complete (The Fretboard Logic Guitar Method Volumes I and II) (Fretboard Logic Guitar Method Ser) This instant

I concur enthusiastically with all the positive reviews I've seen about Fretboard logic. After decades of playing by ear I've been studying theory and am finding it a tedious and boring process.

However, there are three tools I've used to help immensely - putting it all together so I can see "why" and just "How." Fretboard Logic is worth it's weight in gold. So is Chord Wheel (available on Amazon)- a visual and very useful tool based upon the circle of fifths (in one direction) and fourths in the other. The two together would make a guitarist out of a chimpanzee!

And finally - David Walliman's excellent videos on Youtube - he was there when I needed him, especially for understanding how to use modes.

Please note - I'm a bass player. For years I've kept an old Telecaster laying around and played it on occassion but lately, due to these learning aides, I'm starting to sound like I have clue when I pick up the six string! Frankly, I'm having a blast (and oddly enough - it's helped my bass playing as well).Get more detail about Fretboard Logic SE: The Reasoning Behind the Guitar's Unique Tuning + Chords Scales and Arpeggios Complete (The Fretboard Logic Guitar Method Volumes I and II) (Fretboard Logic Guitar Method Ser).

The Man Who Made Vermeers: Unvarnishing the Legend of Master Forger Han van Meegeren Immediately

Many people know the famous paintings by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. In the past decade, the images that come to mind upon hearing Vermeer's name have been made more lucid by the novel Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier, and later the movie staring Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth. However, because of reading The Man Who Made Vermeers: Unvarnishing the Legend of Master Forger Han van Meegeren by Jonathan Lopez, I am unable to distinguish mentally the stories of Vermeer and van Meegeren. When I think of Vermeer's name, I now also recall van Meegeren's artistic contributions and devious story. As Lopez points out, van Meegeren not only forged artwork, but he forged an identity. van Meegeren's pseudo-Vermeers added a dynamic edge to the way art critiques thought about Vermeer's style, and left a lasting impact on Vermeer's name.
After many failed attempts to become a successful artist, van Meegeren turned to the world of forgery and cheated his way to a prosperous life. While he may not have been an honest man, van Meegeren was undeniably bright. Little is known about Vermeer's past, and in the absence of knowledge, van Meegeren saw an opportunity. There is a time period where no one knows where Vermeer was, or what he was doing. Seeing that there were already speculations that Vermeer spent this time in Italy, studying the works of Caravaggio, van Meegeren chose to paint pieces that would bring that myth to life. However, although he succeeded in fooling the art world for quite some time, van Meegeren ended up doing business with the "wrong people"--the Nazis--and got caught, plummeting his career and tainting his name eternally.

I read The Man Who Made Vermeers as research for my first paper--an analysis of the pseudoscience of art forgery and Han van Meegeren in particular. However, out of the half dozen sources I used, Lopez's account stood out to me as being different. Lopez's attention to historical details and creative use of imagery makes this nonfiction account of van Meegeren's life seem like a history textbook in the form of a fictitious, and riveting, story. It appears that Lopez not only aspires to tell the dramatic story of a notorious forger, but he also wants to depict van Meegeren as a real person--analyzing his character for both strengths and weaknesses.

While many other authors made it evident that they were well versed in the actions of van Meegeren, Lopez's book is saturated with impeccable historical research and flowery language to accompany the scientific facts about van Meegeren's fraud. One of van Meegeren's forgeries was a painting called the Lace Maker, a pseudo-Vermeer bought by a man named Joseph Duveen. Along with the Lace Maker, Duveen also bought another Vermeer forgery by van Meegeren--The Smiling Girl. While many biographies on van Meegeren would be content telling the reader only about these two purchases, Lopez delves into the inner psyche of Duveen and explores how he made his purchasing decisions. Apparently, Duveen not only bought these two "Vermeers" but he also purchased two other pseudo-Vermeers, The Girl with a Kitten and "another sauced-up seventeenth-century picture of a very French-looking boy" (54). Finally, to elaborate further on the historical detail, Lopez includes the fact that--although Duveen believed the four previously mentioned paintings were authentic works by Vermeer--Duveen passed up the chance to buy The Girl with the Red Hat, "the only real Vermeer he was offered during this period" (55). Duveen passed on this opportunity not because he thought it was fake, but because he thought it was too small--and Duveen was weary of small paintings (a fear that did save him later from buying another Vermeer forgery called The Young Woman Reading) (54). Lopez does not talk only about Duveen's dealings with van Meegeren, but also includes details about all his other exchanges around the same time period. This attention to historical detail, although it may initially appear frivolous, allows the reader to understand better the characters--and see them as real people with thoughts and emotions. In a successful attempt not to have the book be considered dry, Lopez includes phrases like "van Meegeren's career during the Roaring Twenties had an undesirable charm: the haut monde atmosphere, the conspiratorial strategizing, the blithe spirit of prosperous times," which paint a more vivid image in the reader's mind, while still including all the historical facts (5).

I admire Jonathan Lopez's commitment to depicting van Meegeren as a well-rounded and dynamic person, and not just a one-sided character. Details Lopez includes about van Meegeren's alcoholism make him seem like a real person. Of this Lopez says that in the 1920's van Meegeren's "alcoholism was still under control: the truly destructive binges, the incoherent, gin-fueled tirades that would eventually frighten off many of his friends, had not yet begun" help the reader to understand van Meegeren as a real man (6). This seemingly does not have anything to do with van Meegeren the art forger, but it does have everything to do with van Meegeren the person. Accordingly, Lopez gives the impression that he knows van Meegeren, at least well enough to comment on his character flaws. For example, on the subject of van Meegeren's decision to forge art--rather than invent it--Lopez says, "rather than soldier on, throwing his full energy into painting his own pictures in his own name, he allowed an essential part of who he was, the genuine artist, to wither on the vine" (7). When dealing with the subject of recounting the story of an art fraud, it is simple just to tell the facts. Lopez however goes above and beyond what is easy and tells the reader not only what van Meegeren did, but also who van Meegeren was. Thus, the reader gets on know van Meegeren on a deeper, more intimate level than he might get in an average book.

Lopez does not try to glorify van Meegeren's name, nor does he tiptoe around the rumors of van Meegeren's ties to fascism--he confronts the flaws face on. While many other historians romanticize the story and the tricks of van Meegeren, Lopez digs into the unpleasant truth and connects van Meegeren's work with fascism. Lopez tells his reader about van Meegeren "parroting Mein Kampf"(8) in 1928, how van Meegeren drew morbid illustrations to accompany the poems in the Nazi coffee table book Teekeningen 1, and how Hitler had a copy of Teekeningen 1 signed by van Meegeren in his possession. However, after analyzing all the facts, Lopez comes to the conclusion that van Meegeren was never committed to the Nazi party, but instead he was dedicated to "the possibility of having a successful public art career" even if it was under a different name (148). Although van Meegeren supported Hitler in his earlier years, produced art for the Nazi campaign, and ended his career after selling a pseudo-Vermeer to a Nazi general, van Meegeren did it all for the hope of artistic fame. If he had been an avid supporter of the Nazi mission, he would have formally joined the party--but "a conventional job, much less a bureaucratic one, had never been high on van Meegeren's list of desires" (148). Despite that it was all for greed, and although Lopez admires van Meegeren's artistic talent and manipulation skills, he sees "van Meegeren's affection for the Nazis [as] the biographical roadblock that makes it virtually impossible to conceive of the forger as a hero in any conventional sense" (8).

In conclusion, The Man Who Made Vermeers is an elite portrayal of the scams, lies, and masterpieces of van Meegeren. Lopez seems to respect van Meegeren for what he accomplished--fooling some of the best art critics--but he also sheds light on van Meegeren's flaws. No person is perfect, and Lopez shows that with the way he depicts van Meegeren. Using historical data, artistic understanding, and by applying psychological assumptions, Lopez tells the story of the real Han van Meegeren.Get more detail about The Man Who Made Vermeers: Unvarnishing the Legend of Master Forger Han van Meegeren.

JACK AND JILL Decide Now

I've long been a fan of the lesser Louisa May Alcott books and now my daughter has discovered them too. I was pleased to find Jack and Jill available in this handy paperback by an on-demand publisher. My seventh-grade daughter pounced on the book first, in great excitement. It was a bit deflating that there was no book-specific cover art or back cover material--it is a standard, rather ugly cover and the back text advertises the publisher itself. But I guess there's no arguing with that part. Far worse, my daughter found a minefield of typos in the first few pages, which proved very distracting. Then she found that about 1 1/2 pages from 3-4 were repeated verbatim on pages 5-6. She showed me both problems and she was absolutely right: the printing process had gone completely haywire. There was no reason to expect these issues were confined to the first few pages, and we had lost faith in the whole edition. Regretfully, we have sent the book back.

Save Hollywood Monster: A Walk Down Elm Street with the Man of Your Dreams

This would be a fantastic biography if it felt like it were written by the actor, instead you get 250 odd rambling anecdotes jotted down seemingly by a fan, which ultimately portrays the facts as whitewashed and Mr. Englund as obtuse. In terms of entertainment industry biographies it's not criminal fabrication such as Robert Evans' The Kid Stays In The Picture but in no way is it the caliber of Bruce Campbell's If Chins Could Kill or even Doug Bradley's meditation on transformative acting Sacred Monsters (Behind The Mask Of The Horror Actor). Great moments in Englund's life such as the argument with his father that caused him to leave home, or discovering Freddy Krueger's core value, or the first kiss with his second wife are spoken of glibly. The nine years of his life between Mangler and Freddy VS Jason aren't even mentioned and both events and people seem to fade in and out of the narrative. It's unfortunate that he was only approached to write a biography when the twenty fifth anniversary of A Nightmare On Elm Street loomed because he's a fantastic actor and deserving of an infinitely more fleshed out and candid biography.Get more detail about Hollywood Monster: A Walk Down Elm Street with the Man of Your Dreams.

Discount Blues You Can Use (Blues You Can Use)

This is a serious guitar book - extremely well written and clear; unlike a lot of books. It goes into some fairly serious and involved concepts, but the author explains them slowly and step-by-step, not assuming much prior musical theory. Not just a collection of guitar licks, it focuses on developing solid fundamentals, particularly scales. As others have mentioned, it will be challenging for beginners (barre chords are expected from the beginning, for example) , but if you put in the time required, will learn a lot. The author notes on his website that he expects students to spend about two weeks per lesson. When you finish, you not only get a course in the Blues, but a solid foundation for Jazz and Rock as well. The songs are simple, but some of them are pretty good. We listen to the CD in the car sometimes just for entertainment. BTW, backing tracks without the lead are available on the website.Get more detail about Blues You Can Use (Blues You Can Use).

Cheapest The Architecture of Happiness

Although I sympathize very much with the intentions of the author in educating us on some basic elements of architecture very much appreciated by many of us, I find the shortcomings of the book annoing. Such a book would benefit tremendously by having more and better illustrations. Also at times I find the text too elaborate and off track, especially in the first chapters.Get more detail about The Architecture of Happiness.

Buying Gitanjali

The two low star reviews of this book appear to be referring to different versions than the one for sale on this page. The poems are numbered and it seems unlikely that there are copyright issues as the book has been available for some time.

Where To Buy Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course: Lesson Book Level Two

I am a piano teacher. I recommend this book to adults who had learned how to play the piano but haven't played for a while.
My students catch up quickly and easily with this book and they like it. This book covers theory, piano techniques and musical terms enough
and reminds you those skills and musical language as pages go by.
This book may not be easy to follow for those whom never played the piano before.Get more detail about Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course: Lesson Book Level Two.

ART/WORK: Everything You Need to Know (and Do) As You Pursue Your Art Career Review

It's all very well to write a book for artists, but if you are working for galleries, you may have a bias.

This bias is actually a Huge problem...

In the art world, when an artist gives a work to a gallery on consignment, the gallery is not putting any cash into the artist's hands...

Traditionally, this meant a ONE THIRD COMMISSION to the gallery if the work sold...

No cash outlay for any commodity on the open market, only gives a fraction of what a retailer might get if they bought the commodity wholesale...

In fact, if a product is bought at a wholesale price, the retailer has tremendous powers to mark up the price- this is how the art market has become such a wild ride...

Now, back to the book...The book talks about 50%...But the authors have not the age or perspective or wisdom in business to understand the ethic of 50%...

50% is the wholesale price of the art work...At a 50% discount to the gallery, the gallery should be BUYING the work outright...

No other product sells for half price unless it has been purchased wholesale...

Those that know art & the art market know that one third was standard. They know that 50% without cash down is exploitative...They know that young artists don't know any of this...

Galleries have been getting away with this scam for the past decade because since 9/11, artists have been desperate to accept any offers, no matter how ridiculous, many idiots actually paying to show...

Is it right to take money from an artist to pay for their own show? No. But people do it.

Is it right to get a half off price from an artist without any cash payment? No, but people do it...

This is a flaw in this book. A fatal flaw.

Do the authors know this is a flaw?

Possibly. But their bias is For the gallery, not for the artist, so they will argue in defense of the practice, saying everyone is doing it.

I do not read books to know what everyone is doing. I read to learn. To be taught.

I am disappointed that the authors do not know the rules. The real rules. Not the ones made up in the past ten years.

If any artists are listening, please know this, ONE THIRD IS THE TRADITIONAL COMMISSION YOU GIVE FOR ON CONSIGNMENT ART WORKS TO A GALLERY....

50% is only if they buy the work from your studio to re-sell...

If they don't give you cash in hand, they don't get 50 percent. That is wholesale.

Once they buy it from you wholesale they can mark it up as they please.

But for Gosh sakes, don't give more than a third to a gallery if they don't buy the work from you...It is highway robbery. Ask an old person, they will set you straight if you don't believe me...

& beware of books for artists written by galleries...(though there were some good parts to this book- the commission thing sort of kills it)...sorry...

The Free Press This instant

Great essay. Should be required reading in school to help unsuspecting generations understand that the main stream media has an agenda that is not based on delivering factual unbiased journalism. The fact that this essay was published over 100 years ago adds emphasis to how long this problem has existed and will serve as an example of how the media has shaped politics vs. the people that vote for the politicians.Get more detail about The Free Press.

The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers Immediately

I got the book before the software arrived and looked it over. I read the foreword and this fella is the kind of person that we should all aspire to be.

After getting the software and following his guidelines on how to arrange my pictures and folders, I installed the software and started using LR2 right away. I've programmed computers for years, but I'm not a pro at graphic anything, so having this guide was invaluable for me. I can honestly say that I never would have figured out how to use the features properly at all were it not for the first two chapters. I'm already comfortable with what I've done and look forward to learning more.

His writing style is easy to understand and guides me from one task to the next just like it flows in the program. He's obviously thought out his approach to workflow and benefits me, the reader, as he teaches me what to do and what to decide for myself, and more importantly, what to watch out for! I can't count how many pieces of software I've had to figure out on my own, only to make one misstep after another before finally arriving at a working solution. His book has already saved me hours and I'm only an eighth of the way through it!

I recommend this book.Get more detail about The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers.

The Mixing Engineer's Handbook, 2nd Edition Order Now

I have to say this book is pretty good. It doesn't go into crazy detail about equipment settings, but it does give you insight on how different engineers approach the mix down process. It was an easy read and I'm using a lot tips I learned from the book! I highly recommend this book if you're looking to learn how other mixers approach mixing.
