This was an excellent book about using flash in the real world. I appreciated all the descriptions of actual shoots, and the problems you run into that are never explained in your manuals, or fixed with settings (such as your daughter shooing you off the party bus, giving you only a few seconds to get your shots). Joe is a real master, and it is both fun and educational to read his "diary".
I have two minor complaints...
- All the information is about Nikon equipment, almost to the point where it sounds like he is advertising for them. It is true that all the major manufacturers use fairly similar technology, and you can still use the information in the book even if you shoot Canon or Sony, but it would have been nice if it was made a little more manufacturer-agnostic. The SB-900 may be a great flash, and what Joe really uses, but focus more on what makes it good (that one could seek in other flashes), than just it's model number.
- A little more detail on some of the shoots - even just napkin sketches of where the lights were are very helpful. The more of that kind of thing, the better!
All that said, I'm glad I got the book, and sometimes if I need a little inspiration I just flip through it until I see something that hits me, and it is always fun reading his stories.Get more detail about The Hot Shoe Diaries: Big Light from Small Flashes.
