This was written by a British Marine Lieutenant who was serving in Japan in 1864. He does a good job describing festivals, weddings, local shops, a funeral, etc. He doesn't speak with any Japanese people to get their opinions of anything, and there's no mention of politics, religion, international relations- it's just a straightforward description of things he sees happening in front of him.
