David Bowie's Low (33 1/3) Order Now

I read Hugo Wilcken's "Low" and Joe Pernice's fellow 33&1/3 volume for "Meat is Murder" in the same day and the difference between the two books is staggering. Wilcken crafts the definitive volume in the series, full of meaty anecdotes, interesting cultural references, and more thought-provoking revelations into the album, artist and cultural milieu than you can shake a proverbial stick at.

Pernice gives us some dodgy sixth-form fiction vignette about teen suicide. Zzzz. Regrettable that that book is even allowed to stand in the same general company as Wilcken's masterful read.Get more detail about David Bowie's Low (33 1/3).

Lowest Price Guide to LaTeX

This text will lay a good foundation for anyone now learning latex. You will be able to produce full featured documents after reading this text. However, the text does tell you that you have to get the other latex books to become a true master of the software. It does a brief treatment of graphics, and of course, refers you to the graphics edition for more detailed information. This is not a big deal for me as most of my graphics would be produced using an external graphics program, and then imported.

However, I do find that it is a good text and have no regrets with my purchase. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in publishing/ becoming proficient LaTex.Get more detail about Guide to LaTeX.

Low Price A Theory of Craft: Function and Aesthetic Expression

This is a very well-written and easy to read book that examines what craft is, and its place in the world. Risatti looks at the properties of craft objects and discusses how they different from art objects. He examines other writer's work as it relates to craft, e.g. Aristotle, Schopenhauer, Kant, Simmel and particularly Heidegger, whose ideas are discussed throughout the book. The text is liberally footnoted, and original authors are always fully cited so you can easily locate the text under discussion for yourself.

Risatti's main thesis is that craft objects are defined by having a connection to the body, and being formed around physical purpose and function. Interestingly he believes that media often considered craft, such as jewellery, textile design, tiles, architectural ornamentation etc. belong in a separate category of "adornment" which should be separate from craft objects, situated part way between craft and art (p. 39-40). As I am personally most interested in textile-based craft this made the book a little frustrating for me, as Risatti's subsequent discussions do not encompass these media. However he does discuss textiles in places where they are involved with craft/art intersections, such as a very interesting piece about Robert Rauschenberg's work 'Bed' (1955), in which the artist partly painted over a bed quilt with oil paint and pastel (p.132-134).

I particularly liked the chapter 'Thingness of the thing' (p.139-149) as this is a succinct and accessible unpicking of Heidegger's 'The Thing', and would be a useful read for undergraduates studying design.

Risatti actually draws a huge distinction between the designer and the craftsperson. He states that "in the process of designing the designer does not directly encounter the physical world of matter: no dialogical/dialectical process occurs, no give and take...between idea, form and matter through which they eventually come together as a fully fledged design object" (p. 171). Risatti states that a designer is "compelled to conceive objects for mass production" (p.173) and his discussion of the implication of multiples in the form of copies and reproductions is very thought-provoking. At first I was inclined to take issues with the claim that designers are forced to remove themselves from the dialogic relationship with materials, and then sadly I found myself forced to admit Risatti was right, and I just didn't want to admit the real-world day-to-day limitations of design.

So, overall, a really interesting book, and I recommend it to anyone interested in crafts from an academic perspective.Get more detail about A Theory of Craft: Function and Aesthetic Expression.

Discount Cymbeline

The feeling I got reading "Cymbeline" the first time was that this was factory-second Shakespeare, as worthy of the term "problem play" as any. A second reading modifies this somewhat. You get used to its odd twists and turns, its often unlyrical quality. Good things pop up here and there. If the narrative never gels, it does keep moving and winds up in an interesting place.

The gooniness of "Cymbeline" is established early on. The title character, King of England just after a time of Roman rule, banishes from his reign Posthumus, husband of his only daughter, Imogen. Cymbeline is angered she did not choose her own stepbrother, the miserable Cloten. "Away!/Thou'rt poison to my blood," Cymbeline demands. Exiled in Italy, Posthumus gambles rashly on Imogen's virtue and pays a steep price despite her faithfulness. While Imogen comes to grief, Cymbeline dispenses with Roman extortion and faces a massive invasion.

Cymbeline has the feeling of a Shakespearean mash-up. You have the sundered young lovers from "Romeo and Juliet", a cruel assault on a good woman's virtue like "Othello", and a mad monarch a la "King Lear" who is twisted by a conniving queen who seems an even nastier variant on Lady MacBeth. There's also ghosts, a beheading, women disguised as men, and a left-field appearance by Jupiter to sort everything out.

It's all too much, especially when presented by Shakespeare at a sometimes headlong, sometimes frustratingly talky pace. The story really goes off the rails when we meet a rustic man and his two young companions who turn out to be Cymbeline's lost sons. None of this feels grounded in reality, yet it doesn't really soar as fantasy, either. Many point out Jupiter's cameo as a low moment, though Cloten's transformation from comic butt to dead would-be rapist is more jarring.

Cloten does have a couple of fun early moments, bragging about himself to two unctuous lords. One makes wisecracks as asides. "Would he have been one of my rank!" Cloten declares after a near-duel with Posthumus.

"To have smelled like a fool" the sneering lord answers.

A little later, Imogen takes heart at her sad situation: "Plenty and peace breed cowards; hardness ever/Of hardiness is mother." Imogen and Posthumus are complex central characters, and in the old Pelican edition I have, Robert B. Heilman advances Imogen as one of Shakespeare's best-realized romantic heroines. Of the play itself, Heilman is understandably more guarded: "Nothing lags; nothing stands still".

Nothing makes that much sense, either, but it's a ride worth taking if you are interested in Shakespeare making one-time use of a historical setting (Roman Britain) or the idea of him struggling circa 1609 to develop a new post-tragic dramatic form, the so-called tragicomedy, although it's more properly termed a romance and quite different from the later, more sophisticated works "The Winter's Tale" and "The Tempest".

If you have the time, the patience, and the passion for Shakespeare, you may like "Cymbeline" more than me. But I doubt you will come away thinking it unfairly overlooked.Get more detail about Cymbeline.

Buying Riders on the Storm: My Life with Jim Morrison and the Doors

On the one hand, I concur with the reviews that say that Densmore's book is filled with more than enough whining. And while it is a natural thing for a human being to wish to share their pain and frustration in order to get past it, I often find the public displays of such raw emotional honesty and revealing of deeply personal feelings to be embarrassing and uncomfortable. Even something perilously close to emasculating. Densmore was the embodiment of the weakness and vulnerability of the 60s counterculture that permitted itself to be ruined and exposed to forces that exploited and perverted it. Fortunately for Densmore, he survived with his emotional scars and an interesting tale to tell.

That said, I must say that the book provides an interesting and honest view of a perspective of that legendary rock group that needs to be seen. Morrison was a complex character: brilliant and talented, yet troubled. A lunatic, if I were to speak bluntly. His early death was inevitable.

The book also showed the complex dynamics in the Doors; especially between Morrison and Densmore. The friction between them was instrumental in producing some brilliant music; but also contained the seeds of the project's self destruction.

The cover of this book is perfect. To the left, Densmore, looking young, vulnerable, inexperienced, and terrified; wanting only to please others and be loved. A California flower child utterly incapable of understanding the dark, atavistic side of human nature. To the right, Morrison, looking like a demented satyr, unpredictable as a Tasmanian Devil, the Dark Side incarnate. Two seconds away from plundering, raping, and beating anyone in a street fight or a philosophical debate. A greater contrast cannot be imagined.

It's worth reading. Once.Get more detail about Riders on the Storm: My Life with Jim Morrison and the Doors.

Order Cinema Studies: The Key Concepts

Routledge Key Guides are typically succinct, thorough, and extremely useful - and this is no exception. The articles cover a broad range of topics from simple editing techniques to sophisticated Lacanian theory. Hayward's tone is authoritative, but never pedantic. These entries are not excessively wordy and are thus useful to beginning film students, or even regular film buffs. That is not to say, however, that the book isn't useful to more advanced students. While most film students will probably own Bordwell's "Film Art", you may need to do a little digging before you find exactly what you need. This guide is very straightforward to use, so you never have to hunt around for, say, how the concept of "agency" relates to the cinema. This isn't really a replacement for a larger volume on film theory and technique, but it is a nice companion for easy access to lots of information.

The articles range from one paragraph for terms where a straightforward definition will suffice to 21 pages on psychoanalysis. Again, Hayward's goal is communication, not a dazzling display of erudition. Nothing against dense scholarly texts - this is just easily accessible by comparison.

The book is cross-indexed and each entry includes helpful tips for further reading. Add to that an extensive list of references, and three indices (films, names, and terms) and you've got a handy reference that you'll return to again and again. Whether you're trying to get a handle on the rapidly expanding world of film studies, or you're working on a paper and you need a quick reminder of what a "parallel reversal" is, this is worth picking up.Get more detail about Cinema Studies: The Key Concepts.

Shop For The Complete Plays

I just had a brief comment. I don't consider myself an expert on Elizabethan era literature, but I've read a fair amount of Shakespeare and a number of the other authors of the period, and I have to say I was quite impressed with Marlowe. He certainly deserves to be better appreciated than he is. One of the lines from Edward II has stuck with me. I think I have it more or less correct, which was: "...and as for the multitude, they are like sparks--caught up in the embers of their poverty." You have to like an author who can write like that, but unfortunately he's been so overshadowed by the great Will that he doesn't get as much attention as he should. Anyway, by way of doing what I can, however, modest, to increase Marlowe's popularity, I'd like to say he's a damn good playwright, and that I have no qualms about throwing my own not inconsiderable bulk behind his reputation.Get more detail about The Complete Plays.

Lots of great info in here on the Rat Pack. However, it seemed like the author was trying to find his identity. Used a lot of big words I had to look up (and I have been in education for a long time) almost like someone recommended he use a thesaurus..On the other hand author will use common speech and profanity. From Pieces to Weight: Once Upon a Time in Southside Queens This instant

I saw 50 cent on the Chelsea Lately show recently. Until then, I hadn't given him a second thought. I honestly figured he was just another thug rapper type (I am not into rap). However, after seeing his interview, I found him charming and articulate. I found myself wanting to know more about him. This was the first book I downloaded on my Kindle. It was a great story. It is amazing and inspiring. It was brutally honest, and I respect that. After reading his book, I am amazed at how he has overcome so many struggles. Improv Wisdom: Don't Prepare, Just Show Up Buy Now

I have to love the book that introduced me to the term, bricolage, or as Madson puts it, "use what is there artfully." Improv Wisdom by Patricia Madson is a must-read for improvisers but still a good read if all you know about improv is Drew Carey in "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"

Madson, chair of the undergraduate acting department at Stanford and creator of the Stanford Improvisors, lists 13 maxims of improv and coaches on how these relate to life at large, not just on stage. The subtitle of the book, "Don't Prepare, Just Show Up" are two of the maxims. Bricolage was in the chapter on Make Mistakes, Please. Other insightful chapters include Be Average, Face the Facts, and Stay On Course.

You will likely enjoy the book more if you have improv in your experience because Madson doesn't take too much time explaining the concepts. But her ability to draw parallels between what could be seen as pithy improv rules and important life concepts is impressive. This book is a fast read, thoroughly enjoyable, and incredibly deep.

The Frustrated Songwriter's Handbook: A Radical Guide to Cutting Loose, Overcoming Blocks, and Writing the Best Songs of Your Life Order Now

The methods in this book are great at getting you past whatever it is that blocks your creative output. The premise of generating a lot of material in a short period by giving yourself a very tight deadline and not allowing self censorship is the best technique I had found for writing songs myself before I read the book. The book takes that and many other techniques and methods, documents them and takes them farther. It could have saved me a lot of time and I would have written a lot more songs if I had read this book a few years back and put the techniques to use.

The only significant criticism I have for the book is the way it is organized. There are many sidebars that stretch on for several pages. You end up thumbing back and forth a lot to read the sidebars and then have to find the place in the main text where you left off.Get more detail about The Frustrated Songwriter's Handbook: A Radical Guide to Cutting Loose, Overcoming Blocks, and Writing the Best Songs of Your Life.

Cheapest Inglourious Basterds: A Screenplay

After watching Inglourious Basterds for the fourth time in one weekend, I went out and bought its screenplay. I have to admit, it's the first screenplay I've ever read for any movie. Usually, watching the movie is good enough for me, but now I realize that screenplays can be just as good as novels. Tarantino is a master of dialogue. He really allows his characters to bring themselves to life throughout the screenplay, and here there is extra information about some of the main characters that I deeply appreciated. Of course, I can see that due to time constraints, the extra scenes couldn't be put into the movie, but they were wonderful to read. The biggest examples are probably the backstory of Sgt. Donny Donowitz (aka the Bear Jew) and also the real "origin of [Shosanna's] cinema ownership". There's also an extra Utivich scene, and some more mezmerizing hillbilly talk from Lt. Aldo Raine. If you didn't like the movie, well, this screenplay won't change your mind. It's still the same basic concept, obviously. But if you loved Inglourious Basterds like I did, then you will absolutely devour this screenplay.Get more detail about Inglourious Basterds: A Screenplay.

Cheap Henry VIII (Henry the Eighth)

This is my second book of Folger Shakespeare Library and I'm very happy with it as with my first purchase. I'm not a Shakespeare scholar. I read Shakespeare's plays because I love his beautiful language and always enjoy high drama. So for me Folger's edition of Henry VIII is just perfect. It has nice introduction featuring some information about Shakespeare's life, theatre, publication of his plays and understanding his language. It's quite informative but not overwhelming.
Explanatory notes are following the original text of the play and conviniently placed at the left pages. That makes reading of even the most difficult pieces more injoyable and easier.
After the play there is an essay by B. Mowat wich had some interest for me too.
As for the play itself, I highly enjoyed it. Feeling an atmosphere of Henry VIII's coart, and following dramas of Chatherine's, Cardinal Wolsey's and Duke of Buckingham's lives gave me an actual thrill of enjoying a perfection.Get more detail about Henry VIII (Henry the Eighth).

Buying Experiencing Architecture, 2nd Edition

7/09 Steen Eiler Rasmussen's "Experiencing Architecture" was my introduction to Architecture in the 1st semester of my 1st year (1964) in Architecture School. We were also assigned Robert Venturi's "Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture" during my 2nd sememster. While I do appreciate Venturi's work, I am still scratching my head over his maiden literary effort. Rasmussen's straight forward explanations and illustrations of form, space, volume and light sank into my eager but confused brain. It helped me understand what Architecture meant as an expression of civilization and culture. When I had the opportunity to teach an introduction to Architecture after I graduated, I was warned that Rasmussen's work required a college level mastery of English. If reading comprehension is a challenge, be forwarned.Get more detail about Experiencing Architecture, 2nd Edition.

Buy Creative Photoshop Cs4: Digital Illustration and Art Techniques

This is definitely not a book for an inexperienced Photoshop user but for an intermediate user it is just right. Personally, I find the authors work fascinating and his creative imagination is amazing! Even though this is not the type of art that I would normally create I love the way Mr. Lea has combined illustration and photography in such an interesting and unusual way. l like the way you can jump around to different sections of the book as you please and that there are a variety of lessons for different skill levels included.

I do wish that the files would have been included on a CD with the book. It would be nice to have the files readily available without having to download them from the internet but this was only a slight negative. The techniques that are learned are invaluable for creative work and I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to take their Photoshop skills to a higher and more creative, imaginative level!Get more detail about Creative Photoshop Cs4: Digital Illustration and Art Techniques.

Purchase Left-Handed Guitar

Lets just cut straight to chase: being a left-handed guitarist can be a huge pain in the arse from the get-go. Finding a good entry-level left handed guitar (acoustic or electric) is hard enough be that from the pains of the extremely limited selection in music and guitar shops to the ire of having to trust online stores purchases for guitars (rarely rated as well) that you never even feel until after you bought them and its shipped to your door. I say this because that's exactly what I had to go through just GETTING my guitar as a lefty. Time and time again I was told to just learn the guitar right handed and save myself the time and frustration. However, no matter what, it just felt 'right' to play left and so I continued to search for materials applicable to us South Paws.

Enter the Left Handed Guitar: the Complete Method. What this book is: a simplistic and basic ENTRY level guitar instruction book setup with the left-handed guitarist in mind. Note I said 'in mind' not 'for'. You get exposure to simple theory and chords that will give you a good starting point to continue on from. And coming from nothing, that's better because at least it is something.

What it is NOT: a GO-TO for how to play the guitar left handed through out your musical development. Having known nothing about music, let alone the guitar, prior to this book it was a huge pain and hurdle to have to 'translate' chords for left-handed implementation. In fact, it got so frustrating that I gave up after a few weeks back in 2006. It was frustrating having to 'read through' the guitar neck when I didn't even know what a left-handed version was supposed to look like, let alone sound (yes, I know it should all sound the same but having the physical ability to confirm you're placing your fingers correctly is a HUGE comfort and motivator). This book allowed me to progress and at the very least have a reassurance of how things should look on the guitar neck as seen from a lefty amateur.

For those reviews saying you will have to 're-learn' the guitar or forget what you learned after completing the book, I would disagree. I will agree 100% that regardless of what product you use as a South Paw you will have to cater to the right-handed music world. You will have to learn to chords or rather how to shape them correctly by 'looking through' the guitar neck and essentially playing the inverse of a righty. That's the continual bane of being lefty. And I do not believe there is any book that will ever be created that can avoid this. But to say you have to re-learn, that is a bit of stretch. It lays out the fundamentals and then basically says, ok, this is the best of what we can show you since you are a stubborn SOB for staying left-handed, so the rest is up to you. If you want to be a lefty guitarist, I am of the opinion, the odds are already stacked against you starting out and it is only perseverance and a strong desire to play that will allow you to succeed. So naturally, you accept this and thus see this book for what it is: some basics to start playing and get over an initial hurdle or two.

If you're looking for fundamentals and basic theory, note locations, and simple licks for lefty's, this is a solid buy. You will have to keep learning from other sources as you progress, but starting out, I would recommend this to any south paw if for the most basic reason that its better than most of the other (if any) of the left handed instruction guides out there. I still refer to the book for some of the layouts and styles (esp the scales) when I get lazy and confused, but beyond that, I have been able to adjust to the right-handed 'norm'.

Worthwhile for a fundamentals book but not essentially a classic or essential buy.

Order Guerrilla Home Recording: How to Get Great Sound from Any Studio (No Matter How Weird or Cheap Your Gear Is)

I purchased this book at the same time as Home Recording for Dummies. The two books compliment each other well. This book filled in some technical depth that was understandably left out of the Dummy book. Still it gave considerable basic information for newbies.
I really enjoyed this book. The author has some really clever ideas to make things happen that you probably won't learn in a formal school or typical "how to" book. I was especially grateful of some of his demystifying explanations of complex subjects. It was very helpful in equipment and software purchase decisions.Get more detail about Guerrilla Home Recording: How to Get Great Sound from Any Studio (No Matter How Weird or Cheap Your Gear Is).

HOW EQUAL TEMPERAMENT RUINED HARMONY This instant

This isn't the first book I've read on tuning and temperment and I'm not sure how I'd react if it were.

I got the feeling Duffin was really fired up to rebut Stuart Isacoff's "Temperment" published awhile back that asserted the Temperment Wars were largely settled by Rameau's time. Isacoff, in addition to being a writer is a pianist, which may make him suspect in Duffin's view.

Fair enough and Duffin's prose is much more pleasant to read than Isacoff's, but beneath the surface, "How Equal Temperment Ruined Harmony" is often circumstantially argued, stuffed to the gills with filler bios (I don't care that Duffin acknowledges the Oxford Dictionary - they deserve co-authorship if not co-royalty for taking up so many pages). And the cartoons are by and large awful and unneccessary. They make the typical Dummies cartoons look like the New Yorker by comparison.

Beyond this Duffin is no doubt a knowledgable and passionate advocate for his view.

He's not asking musicians to abandon "ET" (good luck with that), but instead asking them to broaden their range of intonation possibilities and understand why and when a varied approach to melodic and harmonic adjustment may yield surprising and satisfying results. In asking us to be open and experiment the book serves a purpose. When Duffin implies "try it and you'll never go back", he comes across as somewhat less than open-minded.

I had a general problem with Duffin's tone, which frequently condescends. He seems at times to assert that no one other than himself is in on this long-lost secret wisdom. It might just surprise him to discover that many non-classical musicians are just as sensitive to and deal with intonation issues - even some of us hopelessly mal-intonated players of fretted instruments.

Duffin raises historical questions that are valid, interesting and worth contemplating by all musicians. Unfortunately, many of them can never be definitively answered. Did the tuning system begat the music or did the evolution of musical practice toward greater chromaticism gradually shape the systems? Did the massive popularity of the piano in the nineteeth century as the symbol of middle class culture unduly "mis-condition" generations of naive music lovers into blanket acceptance of the artificial equal termperment? With the overwhelming majority of (western) music possessing both melody and some form of harmony, is Duffin's purist approach really feasible for all but the solo performer?

All interesting ideas worth considering and a good read (and fairly quick if you skip the boring bios).

Guide to Sound Systems for Worship Best Quality

I have used and recommended "Guide to Sound Systems for Worship" since it was first introduced in 1990 as a training manual for fledgling audio techs. It is clear and simple to understand. However, because of it's age, it lacks information on modern hardware and techniques. Regardless of these lacks, it deserves to be in your library and in the tool kit of all new audio techs as a fundamental reference. It continues to be a praise worthy reference for professional audio training.Get more detail about Guide to Sound Systems for Worship.
