Discount The Physics of Star Trek

This is a fun and educational book. Lawrence Krauss,a physicist who loves Star Trek, offers gentle criticism of much of the physics in the show. Sound waves do not travel in space, to take one example. At the same time, he concedes some of Star Trek's supposedly far-out ideas are conceivable, if unlikely (e.g. traveling faster than the speed of light). Anyone who has even a passing interest in Star Trek and has ever wondered "could that really happen?" should read this book.Get more detail about The Physics of Star Trek.

Buy The Pixar Touch

The Pixar Touch: The Making of a Company
Review by Richard L. Weaver II, Ph.D.

I do not like animated films, and I don't go to see them (with the exception of taking my grandkids when those situations dictate my presence). The only reason this opening comment is relevant is because Price's book "is a story of technical innovation that revolutionized animation." This is truly a Cinderella story, a rags-to-riches phenomena, and a triumphant business experience that began with a dream (It is the dream of Pixar's technical genius and founding CEO, Ed Catmull), remained true to the ideals of its founders (antibureaucratic and artist driven), and ends up a multibillion-dollar success (adapted from the front jacket). Not knowing anything about animation (and having no interest in it at all), I found Price's book fascinating. I love the stories he tells and how he incorporates biographies of people like Catmull, who turned down Disney when it approached him to help design the Walt Disney World attraction Space Mountain. He talks of Steve Jobs who was thrown out of Apple Computer and bought Pixar Studio for just $5 million, then immediately discovered he had to spend twice that to keep it afloat. Price also mentions John Lasseter who advances from a skipper on Disneyland's Jungle Cruise to the principal creative advisor of Disney and Pixar animation. I loved his discussion, as well, of how computer animation developed. This is a superb book full of well-supported facts (there are 16 pages of notes), that is both engaging and entertaining.Get more detail about The Pixar Touch.

Purchase Roadshow: Landscape With Drums: A Concert Tour by Motorcycle

This is the second Neil Peart book I have read after the very different and emotionally more intense Ghost Rider. I read the books as an avid motorcyclist first and a music fan second although i have to admit that i know the square root of nothing about Rush and i have honestly never listened to a single one of their songs never mind an album. I also have no interest whatsoever in seeing them or hearing them. I say this to make the point that this writing stands out on its own. The book does really major on the events of the road trip versus the bands tour. But there is enough there for true Rush fans and great insight into the lifestyle of a professional musician of this high standard. I don't really understand how he makes the mundane interesting. The book really is a page turner. It is interesting to read of his occasional difficulty dealing with fans and gatherings of friends and admirers. This seems a wee bit odd given his profession and jars a bit since the fans put him in the position he enjoys today. I know he knows that and also knows that "fan is short for fanatic" as well. Another high quality book from Mr Peart.Get more detail about Roadshow: Landscape With Drums: A Concert Tour by Motorcycle.

Where To Buy Green Porno

Isabella Rossellini has used her status as actor, model, and animal activist to produce a work that adheres to each level of her career while providing an entertaining, informative product. "Green Porno" effectively mixes elements of humor, surrealism, and science to lay bare all the activities one only previously assumed the animal kingdom participated in - debauchery and sexual gratification to the extreme. The short films themselves are self-contained fast facts that both shock and amaze in their collaboration of the extremely suggestive (Rossellini's gyrating hips and oversized sexual organs) and the juvenile (cartoons and puppetry). The end result? A fascinating dive into the sexual behaviours intrinsic to all life, putting forth applicable questions of gender, sexual mores, sadomasochism, and even metaphorical cannibalism. Even greater appreciation must be heaped upon Rossellini's shoulders in her frank debasement of rhetoric and the carnal underscore apparent in many common English phrases. While these elements are abstract and certainly collegiate principals, the material is never pretentious beyond its admittedly odd turn in the final segment "Elephant Seals." Animal rights are brought under scruity by both Isabella and a biologist during the second series "Marine Animals", but the revelations are not as distracting as one might assume.

Although the DVD is toted as an additional feature of the book, I consider the writings secondary to the short films themselves. The stills, however, further fuel the argument that Isabella could land a LancĂ´me contract even at her current age. In any event, "Green Porno" is a true erotic education from earthworm to whale, and one would be amiss to overlook the sexual artistry.Get more detail about Green Porno.

One Of Ours

When one reads a novel such as One of Ours, it's hard not to think of those who have died giving the ultimate sacrifice fighting for freedom. And yet war is such a horrible experience for all those involved, most often the youngest and most vibrant of society.

This novel tells the story of Claude Wheeler, who is impatient and unenthusiastic about his life on a Nebraska farm. He has little enthusiasm for farm work, merely tolerates his family and feels a constant sense of agitation. Until, that is, the US enters World War I. All of a sudden, as if it's a revelation, Claude feels a sense of duty, a sense of belonging, a sense of raison d'etre. The slow moving pace of the early part of the book reflects, I believe, Claude's attitude with how slow and meaningless his life had been thus far. Cather makes use of this beginning section of the book to expertly develop his character as well as the long list of supporting characters.

During the latter part of the novel, when Claude experiences war, Cather's imagery was so real and so emotionally provoking that I had a hard time believing that she had never been to war. As the reader, I felt like I was there in the trenches with Claude or walking alongside him. Towards the climax of the book, when Lt. Claude Wheeler arrives to take over at a trench, the description of what he found was visually and emotionally graphic: "The stench was the worst they had yet encountered, but it was less disgusting than the flies: when they inadvertently touched a dead body, clouds of wet, buzzing flies flew up into their faces, into their eyes and nostrils. Under their feet, the earth worked and moved as if boa constrictors were wriggling down there, soft bodies, lightly covered..." Words so descriptive that as the reader, I found myself swatting the invisible flies away and covering my nose against the stench.

Claude, who would have considered himself Christian, "wanted little to do with theology or theologians," and, in many respects, found himself leaning toward liberal ideology. However, in the climax of the book, he surprises himself (and the reader) by beseeching God in the face of tragedy and asking for nothing short of a miracle. In exchange, Claude makes his own promise with God.

Willa Cather was one of those writers who encompassed the entire package: great storytelling, exquisite writing, memorable characters, visually clear and exciting imagery. This is an ideal book to read around Veterans Day or Remembrance Day in November.

I highly recommend this Pulitzer-prize winning novel to anyone who wishes to read a good story, but also for those who wish to understand that "Real freedom isn't really free," and to allow Colonel John McCrae's words from the poem "In Flanders Fields" to hit home: "We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved and now we lie in Flanders Fields."Get more detail about One Of Ours.

Photographer's Guide to the Leica D-Lux 4: Getting the Most from Leica's Compact Digital Camera Best Quality

I wanted a good point and shoot for those times when too much camera equipment (DSLR w/lenses) would be in the way. After much research, I decided on the Lumix lx3 (country cousin to the Leica D-Lux 4), and to my suprise, received one as a birthday gift. It is a beautiful little gem w/a Leica lense. However, the instruction book is a nightmare to comprehend. I was so frustrated that I went on line asking if anyone knew of an adjunt /attendnat book to asist me. BINGO! I located a reference to Alexander S. White's book, PHOTOGRAPHER'S GUIDE TO THE LEICA D-LUX 4, in a review of the Lica camera. As the two cameras are identical (well almost)I ordered the book. I promise that if you purchase this great little book, you will enjoy your cameras even more than you do presently. I have a library stocked with just about every instruction and guide book for each Canon camera I have owned and presently own. Mr White's book is on a par with the best of these. The highest praise to ths author and his very well written book is to say that it reads as if my father had written it. He was a great amature photographer and taught me (over 40 yrs ago) the the love of this hobby...step by step. A Treatise of Human Nature Decide Now

I read this book for a graduate seminar on ethics. Hume's Treatise of Human Nature along with his staunch empirical approach to epistemology, has garnered him recognition as a "great skeptic" of the rationalist tradition in philosophy and recognition as the greatest philosopher to write in English. Hume's ethical project is concerned with discovering how people's nature dictates moral behavior and in discovering the moral virtues that society deems useful. Hume separates himself from the classical Greek notion of how an agent acts virtuously when he posits his thesis that people are incapable of using reason to sway their emotions or substantially influence their wills. "I shall endeavour to prove first, that reason alone can never be a motive to any action of the will; and secondly, that it can never oppose passion in the direction of the will." ((T, 2.3.3). Hume's theory regarding the process that agents use to act is a departure from the classical Greek model in that it relies on passion and is devoid of the idea of using practical reasoning to overcome feelings of fear to accomplish a noble end. For Hume, only a person's passions can choose their ends, and he denies that reason has the ability to evaluate their ends. (T, 3.1.1). Hume's notions on reason vastly contradicts the vast majority of ancient and modern philosophers' beliefs, regarding the amalgamation of human emotion and reason producing the practical reasoning to guide an agent to act.

Hume's anti-rationalist assertion that reason cannot be the major factor producing moral action provides the foundation for his entire ethical theory. In essence, Hume uses a causality argument to explain virtues and vices and what motivates people to make moral choices. Hume argues that what moves people are sentiments of pleasure, such as, pride or love, or pain, such as humility or hatred, as they either observe actions by others or contemplate performing acts of their own. "In every case, therefore, we must judge of the one by the other; and may pronounce any quality of the mind virtuous, which causes love or pride; and any one vicious, which causes hatred or humility." (T, 3. 3. 1). Hume adopts a subjective view to morality. He argues that one cannot use reason or science to deduce "truths" in ethics. Actions are deemed virtuous by a particular society through judgments of approval or distaste of people's sentiments when observing or contemplating a particular action. With this ethical model, Hume posits the notion that there are only two types of virtues, "natural" and "artificial," and that courage is a natural virtue since it brings the pleasurable sentiment of praise and pride to the one who acts courageously.

Hume leaves very little if any room for reason to either direct the people will, or even work in conjunction with people passions or emotions to form any kind of practical reasoning a person can rely on to guide them on a path to ethical behavior.

The Great Movies Right now

Volume 1 of a pair (see The Great Movies II which I reviewed earlier) of collected extended critical reviews of the most important movies of all time. This book includes all the expected, including some of my all time favorites like "Casablanca", "Chinatown", and "Citizen Kane", and some of the more obscure critic's-picks type of movies like "Woman in the Dunes" and 'Un Chien Andalou"--most of which I find are available on Netfllix, the modern movie maven's mecca.

Ebert's Great Movies wraps up my recent tour of movies from worst (The fifty worst films of all time: (and how they got that way)) to bad (I Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie) to evey day (A Year at the Movies: One Man's Filmgoing Odyssey), and while it is fun to laugh about and even admire the worst in movies, it is the best that makes us look forward one more time to willful suspension of disbelief in the dark.

But while Ebert and others can act as guides, we will each find our own place in the dark. One movie ("Last Year at Marienbad") makes both the worst and the great lists. Put these movies in your Netflix queue (yes, Last Year is available), turn out the lights, open your eyes, and you decide.Get more detail about The Great Movies.

Lowest Price Exile on Main St.: A Season in Hell with the Rolling Stones

I have to agree with the other reviewer here that commented on Greenfield's phrasing, his quoting of Shakespeare, etc. It did get very tedious! I bought this book because I truly enjoyed his other book on the Stones. My first copy was cut up for the pictures (I was a teenager) that I put on my walls, the second was a used one that I could only find online, many years later. I cherish this book. But "Season in Hell" turned out to be a dud. The only useful thing I gleaned from it (hence the two stars and not one) was the writing about Gram Parsons. I had always wanted to learn more about his relationship with the Stones and Keith in particular. But the rest of it just didn't do much for me. I'll stick with Greenfield's first book!Get more detail about Exile on Main St.: A Season in Hell with the Rolling Stones.

Low Price The Ghosts of Berlin: Confronting German History in the Urban Landscape

Am reading The Ghosts of Berlin in anticipation of a trip there this coming summer. Great book for those interested in how the architecture of Berlin is the manifestation of the city's identity crisis. How does a city, its inhabitants, its government and the architects who design for it hide or reveal or inform their turbulent history and future hopes? This book provides an insightful view into the urban landscape of Berlin circa 1997: "German architecture and urban design cannot escape the crisis of German national identity...A building or monument might be able to display the wounds of Berlin's past, but it can do little to heal or even hide them."Get more detail about The Ghosts of Berlin: Confronting German History in the Urban Landscape.

Cheapest The Art of Dramatic Writing: Its Basis in the Creative Interpretation of Human Motives

Egri's book is an outstanding work for narrative writers seeking to move to the next level in their storytelling. Egri's idea on establishing a strong, focused premise around which to develop the narrative has many disciples today--Robert McKee's Story and Stanley Williams's The Moral Premise being two good examples--but Egri's focus on stage plays sets it apart from almost all of those subsequent works, which are directed toward screenwriting. Nevertheless, in spite of its emphasis on the theater, Egri's ideas work for writers of any narrative form--novels, plays, screenplays. I would recommend this book to any writer seeking to improve his or her sense of story.

But I wouldn't buy this edition again under any circumstance!! The formatting is bizarre. The text is in a tiny, tiny font with unindented paragraphs with no space between the paragraphs. The only way to determine where a paragraph ends is when a line stops partway across the page, but occasionally lines end somewhere in the middle of the page as well as the middle of a sentence and continue the incomplete sentence on the next line. Throw in occasional misspellings, entire sections omitted from Ergi's original book, no index...this version is a trainwreck! Any publisher who would do this to a book and its readers has a pretty low regard for both books and readers.Get more detail about The Art of Dramatic Writing: Its Basis in the Creative Interpretation of Human Motives.

Reading the book was a delight and a walk down memory lane for me, as I have known Noah and Logan since they were born. Best friend of their Mom and dear friend of their Dad.
I have been telling their Mom for many years that I knew that I would be seeing the "boys" at the Academy Awards one day!
I have shared their book with many friends and have passed it on to folks in our community to share with teens to inspire them to not give up their dreams.
I can't wait for the movie to make it up north to Alaska so I can see it..just seeing the trailer gave me goosebumps to see Ed Harris's transformation..he truly captured their Fathers essence.
I am so very proud of Logan and Noah for their hard work and making the dream come true.. and at their young age..I know for sure they will continue to be successful in each and every project they dive into and give their beautiful hearts and souls to.

I LOVED this book. From the mouth of G. W. Order Moon River and Me

I love Andy Williams. Saw him with my family in San Francisco in December of 2003. His voice was golden as ever. Considering the lack of autobiographies, or biographies for that matter, of the great popular singers, this book came as a surprise. I saw it at the airport in Baltimore and was surprised to see it. I didn't see any promotion for this book. Had I not seen it there, I never would have known about it. I enjoyed the book tremendously. I didn't realize how poor his family was. It was his father that decided to use music to make certain his boys would not have to live in such poverty and saw it as their way out. A lot of interesting stories, particularly about song writer Kay Thompson, the woman who almost single handedly made Andy's career. Even though I really enjoyed the book, I was disappointed with the lack of mention of the actual recording sessions, his opinion about the arrangers he worked with (except the ones he mentions on his TV shows, and the brief mentions of Archie Blyer) and how he was treated by Columbia Records. I found it curious in the fact that he said he bought the master tapes of all his recordings for Cadence and had them subsequently reissued on Columbia. This is interesting to me because when I purchased the reissues of the Cadence recordings on CD that were issued by Sony (which now owns the Columbia records library) I was disappointed at the incredibly poor quality of the transfer. Yet, when I bought the same Cadence recordings issued by Varese Sarabande, they sound excellent. So I wonder if Sony only had inferior copies of Andy's master tapes, or did Andy choose not to license the master tapes to Sony? So more clarification on why this is would have been helpful. I also wanted more insight in his style of recording, how often he rehearses and if he had any preferences for any particular arranger or conductor. So I guess I wanted a more insightful look at Andy the musician, in addition to all the great stories he had told. A minor quibble, but as a huge music fan, I would have found this material invaluable. I would have also liked a discography of his recorded works. That too is also absent, but again, this is a memoir and not intended as a discography of his recordings, but even a small discogarphy would have been welcome. One the whole, the book is very enjoyable and is a must for all Andy fans.Get more detail about Moon River and Me.

Brian Eno's Another Green World (33 1/3 series)

Credit to the author for avoiding the straightforward 'making of' template of your duller 33 1/3 entries but unfortunately she never does arrive at an interesting alternative. The better 33 1/3 entries either work as almost a jumping off into something larger (Carl Wilson's Let's Talk About Love - probably the best 33 1/3 - examines the nature of good and bad taste, Douglas Wolk's Live at the Apollo feels like a lost chapter from Delillo's Underworld) or as a trip down the rabbit hole, really loving and living within the work (thinking here esp. of Franklin Bruno's Armed Forces and Eric Davis' Led Zeppelin IV, both of which abound in flourishes appropriate to their subjects). The better entries also feel like books, short books yes but nevertheless something necessitating the length, that what the author accomplishes could not have been done within the confines of a magazine. This on the other hand feels very much like a magazine article that has been expanded but not really developed. Lots of filler and many fruitless digressions. Pared down to a magazine feature the gist of an idea developed here, concerning 'collaboration' and 'process', might not seem so threadbare but here, over one hundred some odd pages, it is a bit exposed. Don't get me wrong - if you love the album you will enjoy this book but I must admit that when I finished it it felt like an opportunity had been missed.Get more detail about Brian Eno's Another Green World (33 1/3 series).

MULE BONE (UPDATED w/LINKED TOC) Review

Aside from the controversy of the dispute between Hughes and Hurston, I deal with the story and play itself.

The play "Mule Bone" is based on "The Bone of Contention," a 1930 short story by the Queen of Black Folklore (ZNH) based on a folktale from her hometown of Eatonville Fla. about two men who fight over a turkey. One uses a Mule bone to assault the other, and the town's Black Baptists and Methodists split over the issue as Mayor Joe Clarke tries to settle the matter.

The play by Hughes and Hurston is similar, only the two men are now a song and dance team fighting over the affections of a local vamp and an epilogue is added to the ending.

Overall, it's mildly amusing. It does a decent job in capturing some subtleties of Black rural life in 1930 such as the courting rituals and the "dozens" insults between the Black Baptists and Methodists (one Baptist insults a Methodist as a "half-washed Christian." Anyone familiar with the competing theologies will have a good laugh at this one). But those familair with Hurston's work will see a lot of "The Eatonville Anthology" and the later "Mules and Men" here. Nothing really outstanding to the Hurston fan, but worthy of a few chuckles.

However, had this play been performed in 1930, I doubt very seriously that it would have been considered as revolutionary as the authors intended. It would have surely set off a firestorm of controversy. Given the fact that few literate Blacks who attended plays wanted anything to remind them of their rural Southern origins, this play would have been damned and dismissed by the African-American elite and white liberals of the day. While the heavy dialect, the use of the n-word, the casual attitude toward domestic violence, the illiteracy and pompousness of many characters, etc. were realistic aspects of Black rural life at the time, this was a side of Black life that many feared would be exploited by bigots to prevent their inclusion into mainstream society. In fact, I have read where these issues accompanied the play upon its actual performance in 1991.

But even a so-so effort by Hughes and Hurston proves to be far more interesting than many other efforts by others at the time.Get more detail about MULE BONE (UPDATED w/LINKED TOC).

The Voice Book: Caring For, Protecting, and Improving Your Voice This instant

For a long time, I have been attracted to a strong, low and clear voice. I like especially the feelings of energy and confidence coming from the person with that voice. The Voice Book by Kate DeVore and Starr Cookman is a well-written book that helped me understand how to get the voice. There are a good amount of easy and simple exercises in the book that make you feel a quality change in your voice. The book mainly educates us about details such as body alignment, low breathing, opening up a vocal tract and forward resonance (vibration ). A few chapters are also spent on methods and tips on how to protect and maintain voice. In addition, I particularly like that fact that the authors do not forget to mention psychological factors such as confidence and approachability. These factors could influence your relaxation of your body, which in turn facilitates the physical quality.

While I was reading this book, I came to understand that a great quality of voice should be produced in a healthy and relaxed way. Some of us mistakenly try to take on a low tone by forcefully lowering your voice. This is a mistake. It could make your voice sound fake or, in a worse case, injure your throat. A great voice, on contrary, can be achieved by "freeing your natural voice" with a little effort. This book shows how to do just that.

I picked up this book to learn to become better in communication. Having a greater sense of control over my voice allows me to communicate more delicately nuanced subtleties in social and business situations. "The Voice Book" was of great help for my specific purpose. But it will be as helpful for any other purpose since the book is written for anyone who cares about voice.

Finally, the book is accompanied by a CD. Just listening to the authors' voices, I was amazed by their powerful, beautiful and very clear voices. It just sounds as if there were a high quality stereo inside of their bodies. The moment I heard the voices, I just simply felt I got right people to rely on.Get more detail about The Voice Book: Caring For, Protecting, and Improving Your Voice.

IN 1996, veteran TV reporter Bernard Goldberg wrote an editorial for the Wall Street Journal exposing the ingrained Liberal bias in the news programs of the three major networks and warned of the dangers. He was promptly attacked and, on the orders of Dan Rather, harassed, persecuted, blacklisted and eventually driven into an early retirement.

Along with extensive examples--ranging from the media's bigotry against White Males being victimized by totalitarian feminist laws while at the same time obscuring--to the point of falsification--black crime, the damage done to children being raised in single parent homes, to how the media immediately tried to blame Timothy McVea on conservatives and Christians but constantly obfuscate whenever Muslims or liberals committ terrorism to the constant portrayal as any non-liberal as a dangerous "other", Goldberg tells the sordid story of his professional destruction and the intolerant culture in the newsrooms.

With the recent orchestrated attack on conservatives, the Catholic Church, Christians in generals while shilling for Moslem terrororists and Obamacare, this book is still as vibrant and essential as when it was first published. Not only has nothing changed but it has incredibly become so bad that there is no difference between the Liberal media now and the former Soviet Media.
Chilling.

Disturbing.

Essential reading to understand our current reality.

Hearing and Writing Music: Professional Training for Today's Musician (2nd Edition) Order Now

I bought this book out of curiosity based on the reviews: I was expecting an intermediate to advanced level text, characterized by a a different take on ear training/theory/composition. In reality the book is at the level of very introductory courses in those topics. Just to be clear: It could not be used as a first year college introduction, and it might be appropriate at most for a music elective class, or a first very introductory course in a community college.

There is nothing wrong with writing elementary books but the title of the book is deceiving and to claim (as in the back cover) that this book will "develop your ability to hear and notate any style of music" and that it is the "definitive guide and reference book for composers, orchestrators etc .." is quite misleading.Get more detail about Hearing and Writing Music: Professional Training for Today's Musician (2nd Edition).

Buying The Complete Idiot's Guide to Wicca and Witchcraft

Let me open with a bit of history about myself. Studying comparative religion, anthropology and mythology has been my favorite hobby for over 30 years, and I have been Wiccan for over 20.

When I first saw this book I was stunned that anyone would have the audacity to write an "Idiots Guide" on this topic. While I'm a fan of the "Idiots Guide" and "For Dummies" series for mundane topics, I thought no one in thier right mind would write one on a religion.

Despite my original distaste, my instincts kept pulling me back to this book, and since I'm always having people asking what is a good beginners book for Wicca, I decided to listen to my instincts and give this book a chance. After all, what kind of Wiccan would I be if I didn't listen to my instincts?

Simply put, this is the single best beginners guide to Wicca and Witchcraft(which I consider a religion, not a practice) I have ever read. I would feel comfortable casting circle with anyone who had seriously read through the book and took the time to think about what they are learning. This book gives introductions to most elements of the craft, giving the reader a good, generic, understanding of the basics.

Keep in mind further research will be required. This book will not make you anything more than a beginner, a neophyte. But it will be a good first step on a life long journey of learning.Get more detail about The Complete Idiot's Guide to Wicca and Witchcraft.

Purchase The Sword of Welleran and Other Stories

It's been almost a century since the "Sword of Welleran" collection was first published, compiling the title novella with other stories by early fantasy writer Lord Dunsany. Now finally this collection is back in print, and new readers can get acquainted with Dunsany's elaborate prose and otherworldly plotlines.

The title novella is a robust story written in a delicate style -- it takes place in the city of Merimna, "a marvel of spires and figures of bronze, and marble fountains, and trophies of fabulous wars, and broad streets given over wholly to the Beautiful." It's a city that proudly remembers its mysterious heroes and past victories.

When the hero Welleran is killed, nobody can quite believe it. But he is dead, and when the dead hero finds that he is "but dreams," he decides to haunt a young sleeping leader named Rold, in the hopes that young Rold will take his (Welleran's) sword and attack their enemies.

In the other stories, Dunsany spins stories about the exotic city of Babbulkund, and how it was destroyed, about the exquisite dancing "Kith of the Elf Folk," about the death of Tom the highwayman and the three men who are having some fun with graves, the Book of Magicians, natural disasters having a chitchat, a hero pursuing a monster, and some of the most frightening ghosts imaginable.

Dunsany was one of the few fantasy authors who wrote before Tolkien, and his stories are still striking in their originality and beauty. Most fantasy writers just churn out bad quest novels of at least six hundred pages. Not so with Dunsany, whose stories are as exquisite as they are short, and whose stories about elves and brave heroes never seem cliched.

Except for the odd mention of pharoahs and archbishops, these stories could almost take place in another universe. Dunsany spins up elaborate pictures of cities that never existed and fairy creatures, without seeming trite. Instead, it feels like a book of lost legends, deities, history and myths that has just been dug up again.

His writing is almost as lovely as his world-building. At times it can be a bit formal, but not to the point where it seems rigid or bloodless ("Evening stole up out of mysterious lands and came down on the streets of Paris..."). He lavishes loving detail and quiet grace, even on the grotesque "sins" sitting in the laps of ghosts. Even the cutesy "Hurricane" is beautifully written, and has a poignant depth.

Lord Dunsany's "Sword of Welleran and Other Tales" is one of his most entrancing books, without a single dud story in the entire collection. An exquisite read.Get more detail about The Sword of Welleran and Other Stories.
