Save Available Light: Photographic Techniques for Using Existing Light Sources

With so many photography books nowadays emphasizing the importance of buying the best (and most expensive) equipment, it was refreshing to find a book explaining how to use natural light (and readily-available artificial light) to take stunning portraits. With simple, easy-to-understand text (with the appropriate amount of humor thrown in) and photos showing the actual setup of the equipment, this book makes it a snap to create your own natural light studio. The author seems to understand, unlike many of his contemporaries, that most of us can't afford to go out and buy professional lighting. Pros set up main lights, kicker lights, beauty lights, hair lights and umbrella lights to perfectly illuminate their subject. Don Marr shows you how to achieve the same results using sunlight, cheap reflectors and your home or neighborhood buildings. An excellent reference for the amateur photographer on a budget.Get more detail about Available Light: Photographic Techniques for Using Existing Light Sources.

Cheap Piano Essentials: Scales, Chords, Arpeggios, and Cadences for the Contemporary Pianist

The accompanying CD with this book only covers 4 out of the 10 chapters. There are no recorded examples for the early chapters (if you're a complete beginner) or the later chapters on minor scales, contrary motion, thirds, sixths and double thirds (if you're more advanced). Be aware therefore, that you will have to be able to read all the examples given in notation and work them out yourself. Buying Grammar of the Shot, Second Edition

GRAMMAR OF THE SHOT - have no doubt about it, this is a practitioner's handbook!

There's something very excellent and uncluttered about this text. Although it's a "grammar book", it doesn't come across stuffily. It's founded on practical know-how and it's derived from working with some important basic knowledge - how to communicate properly using moving visual images. The rules and applications of them are clear.

This is a requisite first step, for any filmmaker learning their trade, or teacher needing to refer students on.

And it's modularized - "chunky", in today's jargon. Compiled of logical, easy to digest pieces, which can be re-combined in various orders, to apply and make sense!

If you shoot to edit, you might consider this and GRAMMAR OF THE EDIT as a necessary pigeon-pair.Get more detail about Grammar of the Shot, Second Edition.

The Road to Woodstock

michael's laid back philosophy of life is firmly entrenched in this book. this does not mean he was lazy or anything like that. he worked himself and everyone around him nearly to death putting on this festival. the laid back philosophy refers to his comments when things were obviously not going the way he planned,eg., several hundred thousand more kids showing up than he expected he just said "it's enough that its happening". this book really gets down to the nuts and bolts of putting on a concert of this magnitude, the problems involved with city, state governments, the logistics were enough to overwhelm anyone. he was just fortunate to have some very dedicated and hardworking people around him that were just as dedicated to putting this thing on as he was.
this book is well laid out,has some wonderful quotes by the promoters, artists and just plain folks who attended this wonderful three days of "peace, love and music". it also has several archival pictures which are very interesting. all in all a very informative and well written and great read!Get more detail about The Road to Woodstock.

"Have You Seen . . . ?" Immediately

I found this book to be a treasure trove of ideas on which films should be on one's must-see list, and yes, one may not agree 100% with Thomson's recommendations (and wonder why some movies were left off the list) but this book still does entertain and inform. The format of the book seems pretty straight-forward with an alphabetical listing of the movies (with the year provided), but I felt the author was remiss in not providing a comprehensive index. There is a chronological index at the back of the book, but none for the main actors, directors, the genre of a movie, etc, which makes this less user-friendly as a film reference book/guide.

Each movie that does make Thomson's list is given a page and the author basically provides his own opinions, insights and commentaries on what make a particular movie appealing and/or worth watching. The writing is concise, candid, and entertaining. I wish there had been more organization in terms of presenting a movie. For example, merely listing the title of the movie and the year of release followed by the commentary is insufficient. I would have appreciated a listing of specifics such as the actors, whether the movie was in color or B&W,total running time, the awards won (if any), etc. There are also no illustrations of photographs in the book. On the whole though, this is an interesting read, especially for those who love the movies, like I do. Some other books I'd recommend:

Henry V (Henry the Fifth) Buy Now

The ad promises explanatory notes on facing pages and some nice things from the Folger Library.

Alas, I am bereft; of notes and Folger I have found none in the Kindle edition.

Well, first off I admit I haven't read the play yet. I just purchased it. But I clicked through about 40 pages and all there is is Shakespeare. (As if that is a disappointment!! It is certainly not) But I bought this edition and paid extra for it because of those features.

Are they somewhere tucked into the Kindle edition that I haven't seen yet?

I also purchased the MobiPocket version, which was only $0.99. It has hyperlinks between Acts and Scenes. This seems to be a superior Kindle version for that reason.

I really don't care. I don't need help understanding Shakespeare. It is a total treat. But I just thought folks ought to be warned.Get more detail about Henry V (Henry the Fifth).

Bigger Than Life Order Now

This book was selected by others for our book club. Well put together. Somewhat pedestrian style, but not bad. It helps if you know a lot about gay porn (I don't). I really enjoyed the segment on the Mineshaft bar in NYC.Get more detail about Bigger Than Life.

Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (33 1/3) Decide Now

I read Aeroplane right before I read U2's Achtung Baby: Meditations on Love in the Shadow of the Fall (33 1/3), both albums contain Christian themes and both 33 1/3 writers chose to tackle them differently. Catanzarite (Achtung's author) took an album that references Christian themes and centered his essay around it, weaving slight references about album production into a study of the Bible's definition of "love." Aeroplane has more overt Christian themes and the writer spent far less time analyzing them. Cooper instead weaved a historical account of Neutral Milk from Mangum's days as a youngster till his last public performance. Both books have their moments, and both books took on an artists pretentiousness in different ways. Catanzarite embraced the themes and disregarded the artist, whereas Cooper discussed how the themes were threaded into the artist's DNA.Get more detail about Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (33 1/3).

Cheap PhotoSecrets Yosemite

I was so impressed with the information in this booklet that I ordered copies for others who I know will be visiting the park in the near future.

Although it is intended for use by photographers, the booklet provides useful information for all who are not familiar with the park and want plan their visit to include as many sights as possible during their stay. Useful information on climate, availability of food within the park, and interesting sights in close proximity is provided in addition to information on the most photogenic areas inside the park. It also includes information concerning seasons that are best for viewing a number of specific features such as waterfalls and Mirror Lake.

Purchase Loot: The Battle over the Stolen Treasures of the Ancient World

For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in history. Unfortunately, my university program doesn't really allow for me to take all the history courses my little heart desires, but I can get away with sneaking in a couple Anthropology courses disguised as science credits (mwa haha). For those of you who aren't familiar, Anthropology is essentially a study of humans' interactions with the environment, specifically ancient humans. Anthropology oftentimes spills over into the field of archaeology, and that is where my book pick (and my recent archaeological interest) fits in.

The subheading of Loot, by Sharon Waxman, is "The battle over the stolen treasures of the ancient world," which gives you a pretty good idea of the content. For any of you who have visited big museums such as the Met in New York or The British Museum, you know that the majority of their historical artifacts don't come from their homeland, but rather, fascinating and exotic places like Greece, Egypt and Italy. Before laws were exercised in the field of archaeology, the rule of finders' keepers was enforced. They became a sign of wealth and priceless artifacts are now often part of wealthy individual's estate, even though those pieces belong in a museum where they can be properly cared for.

Now that the countries that have been plundered for centuries are starting to see the cultural and monetary value in these pieces, they are requesting for them to be returned. Because the laws involving goods that have been removed from their homeland for centuries are blurry or even non-existent, a war is raging in the anthropological and archaeological world. And that war is precisely what Waxman focuses on in Loot.

Loot is specifically about 4 museums: the Louvre, the Met, the British Museum and the J. Paul Getty Museum, all being fought by Greece, Turkey, Italy and Egypt for goods and artifacts they consider to be rightfully theirs. Big points of contention are the Elgin Marbles from Greece and the Rosetta Stone (along with another bazillion artifacts) from Egypt. Each country stakes its historical and cultural claim on the pieces, as do the museums.

If, the museums argue, these priceless pieces were not locked securely in their hands, they may have been destroyed in their homelands. Not only that, but most people will never see these artifacts if they are kept in their homeland because they are not ideal travel situations, especially when war breaks out. The museums also claim that in a war, these artifacts may be destroyed either by accident or for the invading country to make a point. They say that for the sake of the artifact, the more established and respected museums should care for them.

But again, museums generate money from having these items; if the Mona Lisa was in Italy and not the Louvre, how many people do you think would visit the Louvre?

But in defense of the museums, if they decide that one item (the Mona Lisa, for instance) would be more appropriate in its homeland, then every other country who has a piece in the museum will be calling, asking for their rightful items. And then where would that leave us?

Waxman poses these questions and more as she exposes all of us to such a deep, slippery slope. One that I never considered or even realized existed before picking up Loot.

While Waxman's research (or any research that isn't assigned by a professor) may not interest everyone, I found the book incredibly riveting. And if you have an interest in history, archaeology or, I don't know, even just visiting museums, you too will find it fascinating to read about what happens behind the scenes.

With a long break coming up and nothing to do, maybe it's time to drop the textbooks and avoid the beach reads. Pick up Loot and learn a little something for yourself. You may not have ever given much thought to historical artifacts and who has the right to own them, but it is definitely something worth your thoughts.Get more detail about Loot: The Battle over the Stolen Treasures of the Ancient World.

George Lucas's Blockbusting: A Decade-by-Decade Survey of Timeless Movies Including Untold Secrets of Their Financial and Cultural Success

A seminal text of the film industry that at once captures everything one would want to know on the history of motion pictures, the film business and the technical side of filmmaking. I wish I had this book when I went to USC Film School as much of this information was, and still is, until this book, spread over many divergent sources.
In this one volume, you can overview the entire film industry from Muybridge to Cameron.

I was surprised to find many of the financial figures for the films which were never released before and must have been difficult to pry out of the studio system. In addition, the film "trivia" is outstanding and although I am a working film professional, I never knew about before. Great research.

My hat is off to George Lucas who once again has advanced the film business more that anyone in the last 70 years, this text alongside his advancements in special effects, NLE , 3-D animation and THX sound.

This book SHOULD now be standard issue at USC Cinema and film schools around the world.Get more detail about George Lucas's Blockbusting: A Decade-by-Decade Survey of Timeless Movies Including Untold Secrets of Their Financial and Cultural Success.

Solo Jazz Piano: The Linear Approach Right now

I bought this book because I just started playing in my high school jazz band. This book is more oriented toward solo and small group jazz piano playing but it is still a valuable tool. I have been playing for about seven or eight years and I would consider my self to be advanced, so this book has really proven to be a challenge for me. The concepts in this book are very advanced so a beginner or intermediate should probably start with some more basic theory since this book assumes that you already know how the chord structures work and that you can read music in any key. The cd that comes with the book really explains a lot too. Overall I am very glad I bought this bookGet more detail about Solo Jazz Piano: The Linear Approach.

Lowest Price Public Cowboy No. 1: The Life and Times of Gene Autry

This long, well researched bio deserves extra praise for a complete filmography, a listing of every recording session (including who played and produced) and scores of pictures. Though the author is obviously a fan of Gene's, she doesn't shy aware from mentioning his frequent infidelities and alcoholism along with his generosity, loyalty, business acumen and talent. It was great to learn that the Autry-Rogers feud was a myth, that Gene was an early fan of Rudy Vallee and that he started his professional career recording Jimmy Rogers covers. This a must read for anyone interested in Gene or the cowboy as pop icon, and a great read for anyone who is a fan of good biography.Get more detail about Public Cowboy No. 1: The Life and Times of Gene Autry.
