Cheap Anne's House of Dreams

For those who love Anne of Green Gables, this book is one to cherish. It is the fifth book in the series. In the books between Green Gables and House of Dreams, Anne grows up, quarrels with Gilbert, goes to school, teaches, makes up with Gilbert, and gets engaged. In House of Dreams, Anne and Gilbert finally get married and settle down with a small medical practice in a cove on Prince Edward Island. They meet an interesting old lighthouse keeper with many stories to tell, Anne makes friends with Gilbert's patients and the townspeople, and gets pregnant. This is a marvelous love story, and one of the best of the series. I have been reading and re-reading these books since I was a child. I own the whole set, some in first editions, some in reading copies for friends. If you have read Anne of Green Gables, you will definitely love this book.Get more detail about Anne's House of Dreams.

Buy Music Theory for Guitarists: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask (Guitar Method)

I have been teaching myself to play guitar (starting at age 60) and realized that I know nearly nothing about how chords are constructed and why they blend well one to the next. This book shows in detail how intervals work to define the major key--now I know what key I am playing in! If you want to be a serious musician and play guitar, this is an excellent book from which to learn the basics. I have only read half-way and I have already gotten my money's worth--by the time I get to the end it will have become twice as valuable.Get more detail about Music Theory for Guitarists: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask (Guitar Method).

Purchase Nikon D5000: From Snapshots to Great Shots

I bought this book about a week after I got my camera since the manual is just that...a manual. If you're just looking to use the automatic modes on the camera, save your money. If you want to really use your camera, this is an excellent guide. There are good explanations and good illustrations in a logical format that is easy to read and understand. I've used this as a hands-on guide, practicing as I read through it and it has definitely made me comfortable with the camera and is giving me a good foundation in the basics of digital photography. Highly recommend.Get more detail about Nikon D5000: From Snapshots to Great Shots.

Order Light: Science and Magic: An Introduction to Photographic Lighting

A big part of photography is understanding light and how it works to affect a composition. Even more so for artificial light photography where the photographer can't even see the lighting results until after the picture as been taken. This book does a great job at explaining light and how it can work for and against the photographer. It contains easy to follow illustrations that delivers the material in a clear and concise manner. Also valuable is the section of the book that deals with the difficulty of photographing difficult surfaces and subjects such as reflective metal and transparent glass. I have purchased many of the highly reviewed photography books on Amazon and this one by far has been the best to date.Get more detail about Light: Science and Magic: An Introduction to Photographic Lighting.

Shop For This is Your Brain on Music: The Science of Human Obsession

While admittedly this is a book which will appeal to a limited audience, I loved it! Levitin runs the Laboratory for Musical Perception, Cognition, and Expertise at McGill University, and has the unique resumé of professional recording artist turned sound engineer turned neuroscientist. This is a highly academic (difficult to read) book which seeks to educate three audiences: Scientists, Musicians and Music-lovers.

The first chapter of the book manages to do something I would previously have thought impossible: It breaks music down into purely scientific constructs, including very technical definitions of terms such as "melody", "harmony", and "timbre". Even the most thoroughly left-brained reader will be able to develop an appreciation of music here! Thankfully, he does acknowledge that music contains elements which absolutely cannot be explained outside of subjective experience.

The rest of the book focuses on the effects music has on its listeners, both socially and psychologically. I've read several books on the psychology of music, but this is definitely one of the best.Get more detail about This is Your Brain on Music: The Science of Human Obsession.

My Antonia Review

This "classic" book depicts plains frontier life in the mid 1800's with stark descriptions of the hardships encountered by two groups of pioneers, Americans emigrating from eastern states and immigrants from abroad. The detailed footnotes add background and color to the engrossing narrative without being intrusive. The title heroine is presented by an observer and has only moderate direct information presented. The story is tightly woven and moves forward at a brisk pace with interludes that mimic the plains life tempo.Get more detail about My Antonia.

The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star Immediately

The bulk of the text is Nikki's actual journal entries taken from a year of a very dark time in his life, with various Motley Crue alumni interjecting with their opinions and viewpoints. It makes for compulsive but often quite uncomfortable reading, not so much because of the casual way he talks you through horrific experiences of hard drug addiction but because of things he did...I mean, I've always thought Nikki Sixx is one of the coolest people in rock/metal/whatever, but really you just find yourself putting the book down at times and thinking "this guy was a complete d*ckhead!"...the modern-day Sixx says as much himself towards the end of the book. He seems to have undergone a dramatic personality change following the events described in this book, thankfully.

It's not unlike reading Frey's "A Million Little Pieces", there's something horribly fascinating about it. I was very glad that there's some kind of redemption at the end of it all - Sixx got married (several times) and has a family that he obviously thinks the world of, and even mended fences with his mother and his long-suffering Crue bandmates.

I think I'll go & check out the Sixx AM soundtrack...Get more detail about The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star.

Ozma of Oz Best Quality

Though LONG past my childhood, I still find delight in re-reading Baum,s books about Oz and all the wonderful characters in each story. My dad used to read these stories to us when my sister and I were children. How we used to beg for 'just one more chapter, please.' I have not yet introduced our little granddaughter to these marvelous books, but will do so on her very next ' overnight visit'. She already is an excellent reader, so perhaps we'll take turns reading aloud to each other. I will start with THIS book because I think she'll quickly be enthralled by not only Dorothy but Bellina, the Wheelers and the wonderful trees that grow lunch boxes. She'll love the whole story I'm sure, but her interest will quickly be gained in the opening chapters. She's already eight but I don't think ANY age is ' too grown up ' for these charming, delightful, adventurous tales. Mr. Baum was a greatly talented author, one with a wonderful ability to capture the interest of readers of all ages - though I feel certain he expected that children would be his only avid fans. He would be surprised to know how MANY adults still re-read and continue to LOVE his books.Get more detail about Ozma of Oz.

Bat Wing Get it now!

There's a lot more to Sax Rohmer than his Fu Manchu novels. Some years back, I bought a cache of Rohmer's books published by A.L. Burt in the teens and twenties, some from the Fu Manchu series, but others with delightfully lurid titles such as The Golden Scorpion, The Green Eyes of Bast, and The Dream Detective, the latter featuring the wondrous Moris Klaw, a blind detective with extra-sensory powers.

From time to time I dip into this reservoir for a completely escapist read. These novels, despite being dated and notoriously full of racial stereotypes, fairly pop off the page. Rohmer knew how to spin a yarn, and Bat Wing is no exception. The tale involves a haughty Spanish colonel and a secret too dark, too deep, to divulge. Rohmer's detective hero, Paul Harvey, is in the mold of Sherlock Holmes, and of course he has a trusted friend who doubles as the narrator much as Dr. Watson does. Together they unravel the sinister mystery, encountering voodoo rites, vampire bats, an Edgar Allen Poe-esque writer, and other fantastic developments en route to the sensational ending.Get more detail about Bat Wing.

The Way I See It: A Look Back at My Life on Little House Buy Now

When I did have to stop reading this book over the past 48 hours, I could hardly wait to get back to it! I enjoyed Melissa's memories about the different episodes. On reading about the "May We Make Them Proud" episode, I found it interesting that both Melissa and I agreed that if a mother was by her baby's cradle and a fire started, she would GRAB THE BABY (as she tried to point out to Landon during filming)!(That was a L.H. that I remember as being very "dark" and quite frightening,as I was 9 years old back in 1979).
Anyway, this book was like a walk down memory lane in the 70's, with the songs that Melissa listened to, the clothing and hairstyles, and of course the memories about Little House! I liked the fact that the title was true to the book's contents. When I read "Prairie Tale" by Melissa Gilbert, I thought it would have many more details about her L.H. experiences, as the title suggests. I ended up forcing myself to finish it, after wading through the VERY sordid details of her many romances. Way too detailed, in my opinion! "The Way I See It" was not written as a tell-all book. Melissa came across to me as a rather shy, gentle person who wanted to share her memories of this particular period in her life with her fans. She seems to be a person I could sit across from and enjoy sharing 70's memories and "mom stories" with, since her son is exactly one year and nine days older than my son!
I highly recommend this book to any Little House fan, especially those who grew up with the show in the 70's like I did. Great job, Melissa! I enjoyed your book thoroughly and will read it more than once, I guarantee!Get more detail about The Way I See It: A Look Back at My Life on Little House.

The 50th Law Order Now

When my friend told me that he was reading a book by 50 Cent, I'll admit to being skeptical. I was not a 50 Cent fan. I wouldn't go as far as saying I didn't like any of his music, but I haven't really been into the whole hip hop scene for years. But when he told me about the theme of this book, fearlessness, and how it was presented, I decided to take a chance.

I'm so glad I did. When I had finished reading The 50th Law, it helped me better organize my thoughts and feelings on the direction of my life and my business. Its about living your life without fear, and making choices that keep your mind sharp and focused while you work your plans.

I even started enjoying 50 Cent's music a little more, having seen behind the curtain a bit. So I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to learn how to live their life without fear....

Save the Cat Decide Now

Blake sadly passed away last summer, but he left us perhaps the finest primer on commercial screenwriting ever done. Easy to read and full of those light bulb moments where everything suddenly comes together for you. As a passionate educator in the music community, I have special respect for his efforts here. Buy this book and then write the best works of your careers!

Low Price Food Inc.

I put off watching this Documentary film because I was afraid they'd use shock footage to indoctrinate the masses to a certain POV. In actuality I think they made the points that needed to be made about the Corporate takeover of the USA food supply and used the appalling visuals of "no so happy life on the farm" to interject the horror of the heartless bottom-line-means-all.

The sad reality is that many families are forces to continue purchasing this abomination because mom and dad work for other Evil Corporate institutions and with downsizing, off shoring and cut backing now have less income to go to many of the upscale markets where uncontaminated, unprocessed commodities can be purchased.

Discount The Men Who Would Be King

What do you get when Steven Spielberg, Jeffry Katzenberg, and David Geffen all want to play together?

Why, you get "DreamWorksSKG", the studio the three Hollywood titans put together in 1994. Nicole LaPorte's book is a well-written account of the men and their company - first private, then taken public in the early 2000's - and its impact on movies, music, and other entertainment media. But LaPorte writes about more than just the "Big Three"; she looks at Hollywood history and the development of..."development". That word - development - means a lot in reference to the entertainment industry. It encompasses "talent", "agents", and "producers" among others. LaPorte shows how deals are put together and how movies get made. She's detailed, but never boring.

If you're interested in the hows and whos of entertainment, LaPorte does a very good job at showing the inside out of the industry. Every page of her long book is interesting and makes for great reading.Get more detail about The Men Who Would Be King.

Cheapest Tales of the Jazz Age

This 1922 short story collection is a trip back in time through the eyes of this celebrated author. There are 11 stories here, of varying quality and I enjoyed reading them all and letting myself visit the time and a place and the culture that is now just a small blip in the annals of history. Some stories are set in the world of the moneyed, others are set in the world of fantasy and there are other that are just figments of the author's imagination. I didn't like all of these stories. As the saying goes, "when they were good they were very very good, and when they were bad they were horrid", but I felt I got to know F. Scott Fitzgerald through these stories, see how his mind worked, and understand how he became so well known and was able to come to his full power in his novels.

His strongest stores were set in the real world, the young southern man who was smitten by a rich young woman, two recently released soldiers from the War in Europe who stumble upon some party-going socialites, a very funny story about a costume party where two men dress in a camel costume, and a sad story about a happy marriage which is spoiled by the husband's illness.

I don't like fantasy and found myself annoyed by these stories, even the one about the Curious Case of Benjamin Button which was recently made into a movie, or The Diamond as Big as the Ritz which was a fantasy of enormous wealth and cruelty. There were stories of unfulfilled dreams and real emotion which I liked. And others that were just stupid and silly and hard to follow.

Yes, I enjoyed this book, even the stories I didn't like. Having a critical attitude towards something I am reading is not a bad thing. However, I was really annoyed at the plethora of typographical errors throughout the book. There is no excuse for that.

Purchase Digital Photography Book, The

After purchasing a high-end digital SLR I wanted to get advice from pros so I would not be frustrated or disappointed. This was the first book I bought on topic, and will quickly go to the donation bin and another book will take its place.

The author includes a few good hints, but nothing that really shows what you can do with even basic digital cameras. There are some situation recipes, but nothing satisfying about the exposure triangle - what I believe to be the real key to satisfying photography. The interspersed nuggets of wisdom are embedded in a writing style and humor that was offputting, so it left me feeling that I hadn't gotten a return on this purchase.

I just read the back cover and it clearly says "User Level: Beginner" and that is a good caveat. Even with that, there is much more he could have included to tutor folks starting out on this hobby/profession. Read this in a library and put it back on the shelf. If you invest in a book, look elsewhere.Get more detail about Digital Photography Book, The.
